Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal for Anderlecht youngster Albert Sambi Lokonga, according to HLN journalist Kristof Terreur.
The 21-year-old had a stellar 2020-21 season for the Pro League side, scoring three goals and assisting two times in 33 league appearances. The midfielder also helped the Purple and white to qualify for the Europa Conference League.
Speaking to The Football Terrace, the Belgian journalist explained about Arsenal’s interest in signing Lokonga. Terreur said:
“Arsenal don’t have a lot of competition, so they’re quite sure they’ll get him. It’s one that, if it doesn’t happen on Monday, it will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or the Monday after.”
The north Londoners have had a bid of around £13.5m rejected a few days back, with the Belgian club wanting around £18m. However, reports indicated that the Emirates club will go back with a new bid and are confident of wrapping up a deal.
Arsenal Fever View:
The Gunners are looking to overhaul their midfielder this summer. Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Mateo Guendouzi are all linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer.
Lokonga will be a perfect replacement for the departing Swiss midfielder. The Belgian’s most impressive attribute is his driving runs through the midfield and the youngster also has an eye for long-range passes. The 21-year-old can shoot from distance and has the talent to become an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s system.
However, the north Londoners will have to be patient with the midfielder. He just had a good season in the Belgian league and it will be hard for the youngster to replicate the same, straightway in the Premier League.
Lokonga can become a world-class talent at Emirates Stadium in a couple of seasons time but will need to be afforded some time to settle down. The Belgian will have the luxury to play alongside Thomas Partey and develop under the Ghanaian’s tutelage. The dynamism of the two midfielders will help the Gunners to play a high-press game and keep the intensity throughout the 90 minutes.
