While there have been no new signings in the midfield department for Arsenal, we could be seeing some players arrive very soon.
One of them would be from new manager Unai Emery’s former club Sevilla and the player could be Ever Banega, according to reports in the Mirror.
The midfielder is currently at the World Cup where he is playing for Argentina. Arsenal are said to have had positive talks with his agent regarding a move to bring him to London.
The report states that Unai Emery is keen on reuniting with the midfielder. If this transfer does go through, it will be interesting given that the North London club are very close to signing Lucas Torreira. The midfielder will cost around €12m(£10m).
Arsenal have kick-started their transfer activity as they have already announced two signings in the form of Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner. Banega would add more experience to an area that is probably lacking a little of it.
The departures of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla have left a bit of a void in the middle of the park and that needs to be filled. Banega would certainly fit that bill as he has a lot of experience playing in the top European leagues.
One of the reasons that Emery may be looking to bring in Banega is that the manager is familiar with the player having managed him at Sevilla. The Argentine was an integral part of the Sevilla team that won two Europa Leagues during his time at the club.
And if Arsenal are moving in for Banega, the move will surely be complicated by the fact that he is at the World Cup. But, the encouraging news is that the club is looking to sign players early and not wait until the end of the transfer window.
While Banega may not be the big signing that Arsenal fans are looking for, he is one that will do the job on a short-term basis. As far as the club is concerned, the immediate target is to get back to the Champions League and players like him will help achieve that goal.
