Turkish central defender Caglar Soyuncu has agreed to join Arsenal and reportedly informed his agent of the decision, according to reports in Daily Star.
The Turkey international revealed last month that the Gunners are interested in signing him and his representative has since hinted that £35m deal is close to completion.
This will surely add some major quality to the Gunners defense. It is said that Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat is a huge fan of the player and wants to bring him to the Emirates.
It is no secret that the North London club are looking to shore up their defense. This season had many matches where the defenders did not match up to the standard that was required.
New manager Unai Emery has identified this as the area where he wants reinforcements to be made, especially with the retirement of Per Mertesacker and the long-term injury suffered by Laurent Koscielny.
The Gunners completed their first signing of the summer when they brought the Swiss full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner and they have also reportedly completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund center back Sokratis as well. If Soyuncu does sign, he will become the third defensive player to be brought in.
Fans will be hoping that this overhaul will bear results on the pitch and the defense which has so often been criticized for being weak will show how strong they are.
The President of Altinordu, the former club of Soyuncu also hinted at the agreement between Arsenal and the player when he went on to say:
“Caglar Soyuncu is set to join Arsenal.”
“Of course we would make a cut from the transfer if he joins Arsenal.
“Arsenal asked us for data on his time at the club, we have put something together for them which will be handed over.”
This is a sign that the club are heading in the right direction as they are trying to address issues that exist in the squad and want to rectify them. Though this move may put the future of players such as Calum Chambers in doubt, signing Soyuncu will be a statement of sorts. All one can do now is wait for the deal to move ahead without any problems.
