Alex Iwobi explains Arsenal transfer comments, slams media for reports

Alex Iwobi was recently quoted by media as saying that he would have to leave the Gunners if the club ended up signing Wilfried Zaha.

However, the midfielder has taken to social media to clarify what he had actually said and what was being reported in the media. Posting two photos of his ‘quotes’, his response was:

‘Fake News & Click Bait! I Don’t know Why Some Newspapers Enjoy Twisting Words. I Hope We Sign World Class Players And Progress As A Team. I’m Looking Forward To The New Season. Happy Sunday.’

Here is the tweet:

Iwobi is currently on a break after his involvement with the Nigerian national team in the African Cup of Nations ended at the semifinal stage. It was being suggested that during this break, the player would have to make a decision if Arsenal were to get hold of Zaha and bring him to the Emirates.

If the Crystal Palace man was to make a move to the North London club, there is every chance that the number of minutes that Iwobi gets to play will be reduced. But this does not mean that the club will be looking to move Iwobi on as it helps to have two talented players fight for the same position.

The Gunners need to have a squad that is capable of challenging for four competitions and for that the team needs to be as deep as possible. Iwobi is one player that manager Unai Emery has a lot of faith in and that was shown by the fact that he played 51 games for the club. And he also had his best scoring season with 6 goals including a stunning goal in the Europa League final against Chelsea.

Another possible outcome that may happen if Zaha joins the Gunners would be that Iwobi plays in a more central role. He has done this for the Nigerian team and has shown that he is probably better suited to this role than the one on the wings.

It is good that Iwobi decided to clarify what he was being quoted as saying. This will prevent the media from indulging in any more speculation. Iwobi will need to have another big season for the club if they are to enjoy more success.
