The departure of Uruguay from the World Cup is sure to have made Arsenal fans happy. The reason for this is that it allows the club to finally complete the signing of Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria.
Now, that he is free of national duty, he can go ahead and become an Arsenal player and he is set to have his medical today, as per reports in Metro.
The midfielder did not go back to his hometown as he and the Gunners decided to get the formalities out of the way. Torreira is expected to arrive in London and at long last, Arsenal will be able to confirm him as one of their own.
A deal between Torreira, Sampdoria and Arsenal is said to have been in place long before the start of the World Cup. This will ultimately prove to be useful for the Gunners as they would have had to pay more if the deal was done after the tournament.
Regarding his move to London and not being able to travel with his teammates, this is what Torreira had to say:
‘I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my teammates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it.’
It is nice to see a player be so enthusiastic about joining the club as it shows that Arsenal can attract players even now. When the deal for the 22-year-old midfielder is made official, he will become the fourth player to be signed by the club in this transfer window. It is a show of ambition from the Gunners as the player will have many more admirers after his performances in the World Cup.
The Unai Emery era has not yet started but it seems to be an exciting path for the club. With the signings that the Gunners have made, the future does sound a lot more promising than many people thought it would be like. Today could be day where that excitement increases with the confirmation of Torreira.
