Wenger eyes PSG duo on transfer deadline day

The final day of the summer transfer window is here and will we get a striker or will we sign a defensive midfielder is the question running in the minds of most Gooners around the world. After signing goalkeeper Petr Cech from London rivals Chelsea in early July, Arsenal have been very quiet this summer transfer window.

All Premier League clubs have made four or more signings this transfer window except Arsenal who have made just one signing. The Gunners are still short of Premier League winning quality by at least two players namely a striker and a defensive midfielder. But as we know club manager Arsene Wenger is a deadline day specialist, so we can expect few surprises from him on the final day. And this time on the final day of the transfer window the North London club have been linked with moves for PSG duo Edinson Cavani and Adrien Rabiot according to reports in the Express.

Cavani is a 28-year old Uruguayan striker who joined French club PSG two seasons back from Italian club Napoli. He has gone onto score 59 goals in 100 appearances for the club till date. Adding to the goal tally he has nine assists to his name as well. He has enjoyed a somewhat convincing stay at the French club until now but has always been preferred behind Swedish striker and his experienced counterpart Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Cavani has always maintained that he had intended to play in more of a central role at the capital club. With Zlatan there his chances of playing as a centre forward is very little. Hence Cavani has been linked with a move away from Paris since last season. Top teams like Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea were linked with him earlier this transfer window. However nothing concrete was reported on this issue.

He is known for his swift movement and dribbling. He is a good header of the ball as well. He would be a luxury for any top team as he would bring with him a different level of athleticism and endurance. Arsenal need a proven striker and this being the last day of the transfer window Cavani will be our safest bet if PSG agree a transfer fee.

Another PSG player we have been linked with on this deadline day is 20-year old French central midfielder Adrien Rabiot. Arsene Wenger has been a long time admirer of this French U21 International and had tried to bring him to the Emirates two seasons back when he was with another French club Toulouse. Adrien Rabiot is an exciting young prospect who has attracted interest from managers like Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho as well.

He is tall, fast and physical. And above all he maintains excellent concentration and stamina throughout the entire 90 minutes of the game. He is someone who can alternate matches with his fellow countryman Francis Coquelin at Arsenal, as it would relieve him of the extra pressure he has been under since becoming Wenger’s first choice CDM in the second half of last season. Rabiot is very young and has so many good years in him. Under Wenger he can do wonders at Arsenal. Hence bringing him in won’t be a bad move.

Wenger is known for his final day signings be it panic buys like Kim Kallstrom or world class buys like Mesut Ozil. Hence we can at least expect something from him. Bringing in Cavani and Rabiot would seriously strengthen our Premier League hopes. With under 5 hours left in the window Wenger has to move quickly to get things done. Let us hope we can pull something off in the final hours.
