We are in the market for two more players, confirms Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he is in the market to sign two more players this summer, as per Goal.com.

The Gunners already completed the signing of Granit Xhaka from Monchengladbach in a deal worth around £30 million, making him the third most expensive player for the club after Ozil and Sanchez.

The North London club have been very active in the transfer market so far this summer which included the bid that triggered Jamie Vardy’s release clause.

There are several others who have been linked over the past few weeks which included the likes of Ricardo Rodriguez, Riyad Mahrez, Alvaro Morata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

When questioned on transfer business, Wenger conceded that he is looking at signing two more players while also suggesting that bringing in more players might lead to imbalance in the team. Speaking to Tencent Sports, he said:

“We’ve already bought one player – Granit Xhaka – from Monchengladbach, because we’ve lost three players. We’ve lost [Mikel] Arteta, we’ve lost [Tomas] Rosicky and [Mathieu] Flamini,” he told TencentSports.

“So we’ve bought one midfielder and we’re still in the market to buy one or two more players.

“But it is not easy. It is not just buying. We also have to keep a good balance. If you buy too many players you destabilise your team. So three is the maximum.”

Going into the transfer window, Arsenal roughly needed to cover 3 positions which were central midfield, defence and a forward. With the signing of Xhaka the midfield is more or less stable and unless someone leaves, I don’t see any more signings happening there.

The defence still needs some strengthening to do, as Mertesacker seems well over his prime and Gabriel is still trying to adjust to the Premier League. So getting someone at centre-back is a necessity for the Gunners going into the new campaign.

The last thing Arsenal need to put up a proper title challenge next season is a striker. We have been missing an out and out striker who could be reliable in front of the goal, as Giroud struggled to maintain his goal-scoring form throughout the season and the search for that forward hasn’t been fruitful so far. Hopefully Wenger can pull out a rabbit out of the hat pretty soon.
