Petr Cech deal close, do Arsenal really need him?

If you have been following the transfer news in the past few days, then you might well be aware of Arsenal’s interest in Petr Cech. Multiple reports today have stated that the experienced shot stopper will most definitely join the Gunners this summer, but do we really need him? Let’s analyse.

The last few years has seen a new trend being developed where the top clubs prefer to have not one but two world class keepers. Arsenal already have three keepers namely Szceszny, Ospina and Martinez, but none can truly be categorized into that top quality keepers list. Ospina wasn’t really the first choice keeper, he was majorly bought to play the second fiddle to the pole. If it wasn’t for Szceszny’s poor form and off field behaviour, he would have remained the second choice.

The keepers we have are good and decent keepers, but not effective enough to fight for the title. Title winning teams have world class keepers and for a team that’s gunning for the title a good top class keeper is a necessity. Signing Cech gives Arsenal a player capable of winning games on his own, just the way he has for Chelsea for the past decade. When you talk about Goal-keeper’s he is relatively young and still has 4-5 good years of career ahead of him. He boasts an very impressive CV and will command his box well. For the style of play that the Gunners play, high defensive line they explicitly need to have a keeper with experience.

He surely is a legend with tons of experience at the top level for over a decade now and if it wasn’t for the young Courtois he would still be Chelsea’s no 1. Mourinho’s reluctance in letting Cech joining arsenal shows how greatly he rates the Czech international. If it was up to the Portuguese manager Cech wouldn’t be leaving Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge let go two of their club legends Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard, but in this case Cech has still plenty to offer and can make a difference which is why Mourinho is so reluctant.

Cech has expressed his desire to stay in London and Arsenal seems to be the only possible destination. If the transfer do take place, Szceszny can be loaned out to another Premier League club which can help him gain his confidence back, while Ospina can play the second fiddle. Szceszny still has great potential as he is just 24 and has time on his side. Over the years Wenger has shown patience and has given chance after chance to the youngsters at club and has players have vindicated his trust by their performance. But the coming season is an opportunity for doing something special and its time for the French manager to be ruthless and poaching away an priced asset from his long time nemesis, giving him a taste of his own.

At the age of 37, Buffon still wins games for Juventus. Cech is still one of the top keepers in the world and the current crop of keepers at Arsenal can learn from his experience. The past decade has seen the Gunners loose their top players to their direct rivals. At 11 million, Cech transfer is a no brainer. Signing cech from mourinho’s Chelsea will showcase the intent and mark the beginning of Wenger’s new era of dominance not just in the premier league, but also in the champions league.

Do we really need Cech? What do you say Gooners?
