Arsenal ready shock £40m move for out of favour Manchester United striker

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly weighing up a move for Manchester United forward Antonio Martial, who fell out-of-favour under Jose Mourinho last season.

Martial, a former graduate of AS Monaco, is being seen as a potential candidate to bolster the forward ranks with top target Kylian Mbappe seemingly holding for a move to Real Madrid.

According to The Mail, the Gunners boss has set his sights on recruiting Martial, a player he had closely watched prior to his Old Trafford move in 2015.

Martial bagged 17 goals during his maiden English campaign under Louis van Gaal, but he struggled to make a similar impression last term with Jose Mourinho reluctant to play him up top.

Overall, the France international made just 18 starts in the Premier League last term while bagging four goals and six assists in the process.

Wenger is confident that a fee of around £40m could be sufficient to prise away Martial, but his shrewd relationship with Jose Mourinho does not pave way for the deal.

As a result, the long-standing manager has urged the club to involve negotiations at the board level in order to pursue the 21-year-old, who was once deemed ‘the new Thierry Henry’.

Arsenal have made a solitary signing in the form of Sead Kolasinac this summer, but Wenger is determined to bring in top quality recruits with a new striker being the main priority.

Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette is the other option on the Gunners radar, but he could cost significantly more than Martial, who has earned valuable Premier League experience.
