€50m star confirms he is ready to sign Arsenal deal, on one condition

Mesut Ozil

Mesut Özil has confirmed that he is very happy at Arsenal but revealed that his long-term future will depend on Arsene Wenger, as per Guardian.

The German midfielder who joined the North London club for a fee worth £42.5m(€50m) from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2013, is the club’s most expensive signing ever.

The 28-year-old has reportedly been in contract negotiations with the club over signing a new deal for few months now.

His current deal with the Emirates club expires in 2018 and there have been reports that he may leave the club. The contract extensions of Sanchez and Ozil will be the club’s top most priority in the next few months.

The midfielder admitted that he is ready to sign a contract extension with the club, but has hinted that the decision will depend on Wenger’s long term future. He said:

“I am very, very happy at Arsenal and have let the club know that I would be ready to sign a new contract. The fans want that I stay and now it is just down to the club.”

“The club knows that I am here most of all because of Arsène Wenger. He is the one who signed me and he is the one whose trust I have. The club also knows that I want to be clear what the manager is going to [in the future].”

The latest comments will be a huge boost for the Arsenal board and the fans, but the latter part of the statement is a cause of concern as he clearly indicated that if Wenger’s decides to end his reign then the German might follow suit.

Wenger’s current contract expires at the end of the season and there is a growing belief in and around the club that the French boss might leave at the end of the season.

Over the past few years, there has been continuous pressure from some section of the fans to sack Wenger, but the board for most part have backed the boss and if he chooses to stay it is likely that a new short-term contract in the summer.

According to me, this is what Ozil said in brief: If Wenger, leaves I leave. So, it’s up to Wenger to decide how Arsenal will look like next season
