Confirmed: Arsenal officially announce Granit Xhaka contract extension, Unai Emery delighted

Granit Xhaka

It is no secret that the 2017/18 season was a very disappointing one for Arsenal as a lot of players did not live up to their potential and proved to be underwhelming.

Among those was Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, as he started the season very badly but he gradually became better as the season went on and ended it by setting a Premier League record for most number of passes.

The Swiss midfielder is integral to the way the Gunners like to play and in fact, his impact is quite visible when he does not play.

Arsenal appear to be very slow and lethargic in their buildup play. The importance of Xhaka was underlined when the club announced that he had signed a contract extension. The club did not announce the length of the contract but revealed that it is a long-term contract.

The 25-year-old is one of the players that has caught the eye of new manager Unai Emery. The incoming manager believes that the midfielder’s skill will be beneficial to Arsenal. He went on to say:

“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us. He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more. I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

Xhaka is one of the more misunderstood players at the club and a lot of Arsenal fans have a mixed opinion of him. But the confidence that Emery has in him should be an indicator of the regard he is held in at the club.

For the time being, fans can look forward to seeing him play at the World Cup. He is a pivotal member of the Switzerland team and he has a new club teammate at the national level as well.

Arsenal’s first signing this summer was Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner. It goes without saying that he knows Xhaka very well. Fans will be hoping that the full back’s experience will be a guiding force for Granit and he can reach newer heights in the upcoming season.
