Sampdoria’s sporting director reveals Lucas Torreira has already left the club

Lucas Torreira

For many fans, the deal to bring Lucas Torreira is done and dusted but there is still hesitancy to celebrate the signing, as it has not been made official.

But Sampdoria’s Sporting director may have put those fears to rest as he confirmed that Torreira had indeed left the club.

Speaking to Sky Italia, he said:

“Tomorrow we will have our first meeting with Giampaolo and this is when our transfer window starts. An excellent player like Torreira has left us but we will replace him. The squad will be competitive as always.”

Except for Arsenal, we have had confirmations from many different sources including the president of Sampdoria who confirmed a £26m deal as well as those of reputed journalists. The only factor that is preventing the deal from being announced is the fact that Torreira is away on national duty at the World Cup in Russia.

After being on the bench for the first two games, Torreira started Uruguay’s final match against Russia. He impressed a lot with his interceptions and aggressive style of play. The admiration for the player among Arsenal fans is sure to have gone up after this kind of a performance.

It is certainly exciting to think of how he will fit into the Gunners squad and the prospect of a midfield trio of Xhaka, Torreira and Ramsey is pretty strong in all departments. The Uruguayan is a little dynamo that keeps buzzing around the pitch looking to break up play as well as start attacks.

Perhaps the deal will be made official only after the World Cup which is not Arsenal what fans want to see. They want to see the player holding the Arsenal shirt and once they see it, they can watch the rest of Uruguay’s matches in peace.

In the age of big money signings, Torreira is coming at a price that is not too high and actually presents great value for money. Fans will be hoping that he can become a success with the Gunners for many years to come.
