Dortmund confirm Arsenal placed a bid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed an offer from Arsenal, though he refused to reveal the exact sum on the table.

The Gabon international has been identified as one of the prime targets to bolster the squad this month with the club desperate to cover up the absence of Manchester United-bound Alexis Sanchez.

German outlet Kicker recently claimed that the north London side had made an opening bid worth €50m for the striker, but the offer still falls short of Dortmund’s asking price of €60m.

In response to this, Watzke has revealed that there are indeed in discussions with Arsene Wenger’s side, but he did not want to comment on the overall package offered by the Capital-based club.

“I can confirm that there has been a first request from Arsenal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang,” he told RuhrNachrichten.de. “We are not commenting on the sums that have been called from England since noon today.”

Despite this, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has stressed that ‘nothing is happening’ in the player’s pursuit, though you could sense that the Frenchman does not want to confirm the transfer interest, unless the club make a breakthrough in terms of the fees involved.

Aubameyang has had his disciplinary issues this term which have involved visiting Milan without the manager’s consent and so, but Wenger has previously spoken fondly about the striker by taking in his positive aspects.

The Gabonese footballer has netted 21 goals across all competitions this campaign, and he could be the potential spark required in the latter half of the season in order to push for a potential Champions League spot.

One thing is for sure, the marksman won’t feature in this season’s Europa League as he is automatically registered in the competition following his side’s third-place finish in the Champions League earlier this term.
