Arsene Wenger: Sanchez will be at Arsenal next season

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that star forward Alexis Sanchez would be staying put at the Emirates next season regardless of whether he signs a new contract or not. The Chile international has entered the final year of his Gunners deal, but Wenger confirms that the club have made a decision to ignore any incoming offers.

“The decision has been made and we will stick to that – the decision is not to sell,” he is quoted on the club’s official website while facing reporters in China.

Both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be interested in the 28-year-old attacker, and there have been fears that the club could repeat the Robin van Persie story by selling to a direct league rival.

However, Wenger appears to have dismissed such instance by citing that Sanchez is much younger compared to Van Persie, although he appears to have made a blunder as the Dutchman was 29, and just 163 days older than Sanchez at the time he left for Manchester United in 2012.

“Every case is different, Van Persie was going from 30 to 31, when he left he had one year on his contract, Sanchez is younger,” he added.

Meanwhile, the £140,000-a-week star hinted earlier in the week that Champions League football could be vital to making his future decision as he would like to play and win the elite competition during the prime of his career.

In response to that, Wenger said that he does not give much importance to translated interviews and the speech may have been twisted as per the media’s liking. Wenger’s main concentration remains on the club’s upcoming league campaign which in his opinion is more important than dwelling over the lack of Champions League football.

“I don’t give too much importance to things that are translated, you know,” he said, while responding to the Sanchez interview. “The whole interview that I got didn’t really mean that. The main focus for us is to concentrate on the Premier League and the Premier League for me today is more important than the Champions League.”

Arsenal will be participating in the Europa League for the first time since the millennium – previously the UEFA Cup, and they are one of the big favourites to lift the competition at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in May 2018.
