Arsenal have reportedly emerged as surprise contenders to sign Marouane Fellaini on a free transfer from arch-rivals Manchester United.
The Belgium international has failed to reach terms over a new deal with the Red Devils and he is widely being tipped to leave Old Trafford at the expiry of his contract on July 1.
According to The Times, the Gunners are lining up a surprise approach for the Belgian enforcer with new manager Unai Emery having previously tried to sign him whilst at Paris Saint-Germain.
It is added that the Spanish head coach has already made contact with the former Evertonian following his Emirates switch and a meeting is scheduled with his representative on Wednesday.
Fellaini has not quite lived up to his expectations in recent years and he has largely been a bit-part player under United boss Jose Mourinho.
As such, bringing Fellaini on a potential two-year deal may not be a worthwhile decision for Emery, considering the Belgian is not accustomed to playing the passing game.
Moreover, the £80,000-a-week midfielder has tended to show a genuine lack of pace in the centre of the park and this has often halted the momentum of the game whilst featuring for United.
With this in mind, I would personally love a player of Steven N’Zonzi calibre at the Emirates with the Frenchman possessing the work rate which would suit Emery’s hard-pressing football.
N’Zonzi worked alongside Emery for two seasons before the latter parted ways and a reunion could be a possibility following the summer World Cup.
The former Stoke City man has a £35m release clause inserted to his deal and Sevilla are unlikely to sell unless a club matches the valuation.
