Arsenal target has a release clause in his contract, confirms agent

Ricardo Rodriguez

Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez’s agent has revealed that the youngster has a release clause in his contract, as per the Standard.

Several reports have earlier stated that Arsenal one of the suitors for the defender and the Gunners are ready to activate his release clause.

The North London club have already signed his international team-mate Xhaka and Ricardo too recently expressed his interest in joining the Emirates club.

The Swiss defender’s agent Gianluca Di Domenico has now spoken about the youngster’s contractual agreement with Wolfsburg, confirming that the player has a release clause in his contract. He was quoted as telling TMW Radio:

“Today, Ricardo Rodriguez has a termination clause, which was not there before. You have to respect the contracts.”

Domenico further added that the left back is also open for a move to Italy, but confirmed that there haven’t been any offers yet. He added:

“Ricardo loves Italy so much, so surely if there was a serious proposal we would see.”

“But we need to see if there will be. I spoke with [Roma coach Walter Sabatini] on the phone a few times, but never about Ricardo Rodriguez.”

The 23-year-old is currently on international duty with Switzerland and played a part in his countries 1-0 win over Albania. He wasn’t at his true best in that game, but from his performance the other day it’s easy to see why he is so highly rated.

He has wonderful pace on the wings and is brilliant going forward. His play is not only restricted to the sides as he can drift inside, showing great composure on the ball. If you have seen the Albania game, it truly shows why there is interest in him.

The youngster had his flaws in defence as the Swiss star left his side of the wing open too many times. However, he has time on his side so improving on his weaknesses shouldn’t be a problem. We already have Monreal and Gibbs in that position, with the Spaniard getting most of the playing time last season.

If this transfer has to go through then it’s definitely curtains for Gibbs, who again has great potential but couldn’t translate it onto the field. Ricardo definitely seems interested in the move, but it remains to be seen whether Wenger will give up on Gibbs just yet for a more reliable and younger alternative.
