Arsenal planning to hijack AS Roma’s defender deal

Mateo Musacchio

Arsenal are in the market for a defender this summer and have been linked with Ashley Williams and Bayern Munich Mehdi Benatia among others, amid reports that the Gunners authorities are set to hold talks with Benatia’s representative over a possible transfer.

However, reports from Italy claim that the Premier League giants are also looking at Villareal centre-back. Calcio Merato reported that both Arsenal and AS Roma are interested in the services of the Argentine.

Musacchio was instrumental to the yellow submarines qualification for the Champions League for next season. Despite being injured since April 2015, which made him to miss the first half of the last campaign. His display upon his return in La Liga and Europa League has caught the attention of the two clubs.

The Italian side are believed to be leading the race to land the 25-year-old but Arsenal are also making moves to have a discussion with player’s agent ahead of a proposed bid.

The Emirates outfits raided Villareal 18 months ago with the signing of Gabriel Paulista-who has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League and now aims to bring his former defensive partner to the Emirates Stadium.

He has made over 200 appearances for Villareal since joining them from Argentinian side River Plate in 2010 and he is contracted to the club until 2018. With just an official announcement remaining on the deal of Granit Xhaka, it could be that Arsene Wenger has shifted his attention to the defence and the attack.

The Gunners boss has Juventus forward Alvaro Morata as his priority to bolster the attack. Southampton’s Saido Mane is the latest target to increase the options upfront. The fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival will be highly appreciated of next signing.

Report has it that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is also considering up an £11.5 million bid. According to Fichajes  via Daily Star‘s Alex Wood reported that Arsenal and Roma are in need of the Argentinian, though Villarreal is not willing to sell elite defender.

Despite a great start of the 2015-16 Premier League, season Arsenal as failed to win the title for the first time twelve year and will have to sign some couples of players if they are to be challengers next term.

Reports also has it that Arsenal’s highly rated defender Koscielny has been link with a possible move to Manchester united, if deal his later finalize it tells manager Arsene Wenger will have to break the bank to sign a replacement for the French man to fill the void left by.

Based on my thoughts, I think even if the Gunners are thinking of not selling out any of the squad defenders, they will still be in need of of a new fresh blood defender as Per Mertesacker is ageing and his gradually loosing form.

I don’t know, part of the issue might be this, Mertesacker is a confusing player, a defender who suffers from what we might call Crouch’s Paradox. Despite him being 6ft 6in tall he isn’t particularly good at heading the ball unless it falls directly out of the sky on to the top of his head. It remains to be seen which of the fore-mentioned defenders will make it to the Emirates.
