Arsenal open negotiations to sign Brazilian starlet, Player wants Gunners transfer

Arsenal have reportedly kickstarted negotiations with Brazilian side Corinthians to pursue the signature of defensive midfielder Maycon.

The 20-year-old has become a regular for his club after a loan stint with Ponte Preta last term, and it appears that the Gunners are leading the pursuit of his signature.

The enforcer was initially being tipped to join Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk, who are well known to pursue young talent from the South American nation, but the deal could not get through during the winter transfer window.

As a result, Arsenal have now jumped ahead of the Ukrainian heavyweights in the pecking order, and according to UOL Esporte, the Gunners have held initial talks with the player’s representatives over a summer switch.

It is added that Serie A side Napoli are also monitoring the young midfielder, though the Brazil under-20 international has now made it a priority to make a Premier League move with the Gunners, prior to the 2018/19 season.

The defensive midfield department has been a concern for Arsenal this term with Granit Xhaka criticised for his lack of mobility, especially without the ball at his feet. However, there are further concerns over player exits with Jack Wilshere’s contract due to expire in just over three months’ time.

The England international is apparently far off from putting pen to paper on a new deal beyond the summer, and it is seemingly likely that he may end his decade-long association with the first-team, unless his wage demands are met.

Preferably, Arsenal would want to have a player of Steven N’Zonzi’s experience in their ranks after his star showing against Manchester United last night, but head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is renowned for picking up young unknown talents who have ended up becoming vital players for their respective sides.
