Arsenal have been forced to make transfers this summer for a variety of reasons with the primary one being a lack of quality and to add to that the retirement and injury problems of key players.
The defense is one area where there is a lot of focus and having made one signing already, Arsenal are ready to make a further two more and those players would be Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Caglar Soyuncu.
These are two center backs that the Gunners are looking at to shore up their defense. The links with Sokratis have been concrete for many weeks now and there have been indications that the signing has already been made.
With these two signings, it will become the third defensive player that Arsenal have brought in this summer as the first one to be made was the Swiss full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.
The links to the transfer of Sokratis and Soyuncu were confirmed by Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth who confirmed the news on the Transfer Talk podcast. According to Daily Star, he said:
“We understand they have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund for the defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
“That transfer is expected to be formally announced on July 1 – that seems to be all done according to our information.
“That makes sense because Sven Mislintat is on the recruitment team at Arsenal and was of course director of football and chief scout at Dortmund for the last 10 years.”
He explained the delay in the announcement by saying:
“Why July 1? It’s the start of the new tax quarter in Germany.”
The next update was on Soyuncu as Mr. Sheth said:
“The next one is Caglar Soyuncu. They’ll have competition for this one because a lot of clubs are interested. He plays for Freiburg.
“His agent says Mislintat has been an admirer since he was at Dortmund. He says, the agent that is, that talks are concrete and all that needs to be determined is the price.”
This is great news for Arsenal fans as it shows that the club is serious about getting business done and getting it done early.
