Sokratis Papastathopoulos has agreed to join Arsenal and the deal will be finalised on Tuesday

A deal that seemed to be wrapped up a long time ago, seems to have reached its conclusion if we go by his father’s words.

Arsenal have made signing an experienced center-back a priority, and the Greek is thought to be the one for the team.

Although there is no definite date given for his announcement as a Gunner, it now appears to be closer than ever. The progress was confirmed by Sokratis’ father who in an interview with a Greek radio station 24/7  said:

“He is happy, he is in England at the moment, and tomorrow everything will be done.”

This is some welcome news for Arsenal fans who have been crying out for a signing to be made ever since the season ended. The reaction to this potential signing has not been as exciting as the club would have hoped. But, getting an experienced international defender at a low price, is a good deal.

The defender who currently earns £90,000-a-week in wages has been impressive for Dortmund last season. His father also added that the deal would be for three years with an option for a further year.

“The English league is the highest [level] in the world, the most competitive, and I believe he will do well” he added. There is another reason for Arsenal fans to be excited about this deal.

During the interview, Mr. Charalambos also said that Manchester United was also interested in the 29-year-old but he rejected their proposal. This alone should impress a lot of Arsenal fans.

It also shows that he is a quality defender who is wanted by clubs and signing him is something that should not be scoffed at. But Arsenal had a trump card or cards, in this case, to push the deal over the line.

The opportunity to reunite with the trio of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Sven Mislintat and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang must have proved to be more appealing to Sokratis.

Gooners around the world will be hoping that the sense of familiarity will result in good performances. And, the fact that he will be able to mentor young Mavropanos is also something to be excited about. All fans can do now is to wait for the official confirmation.
