Arsenal to complete fourth summer signing next week

Lucas Torreira

Arsenal and their pursuit of Lucas Torreira has been public for quite some time now and after the exit of Uruguay from the World Cup, the transfer is expected to be completed by next week, according to reports in Express.

The club was waiting for the participation of Uruguay to get over before confirming the deal. The Mirror reported recently that a £26m fee has already been agreed with Sampdoria and a four-year contract has also been settled.

Uruguay lost 2-0 to France in the quarter finals and as a result have been knocked out of the competition. Arsenal did not want to affect Torreira during the World Cup and decided not to do any sort of announcement until their run was over.

The player’s father has also been talking about the move and how it would affect the Uruguayan. This is what he had to say:

‘There will be people that will accompany him,’ Ricardo told Teledoce via Goal.  ‘He won’t be alone. It’s a big change [going to England] and we don’t want to think about it yet because we’re scared.’

‘The truth is it’s tough to manage the language, adapt to the [London] society and customs and at the same time not lose ours,’ he added. ‘But there’s a whole programme getting readied for Lucas.’

It is nice to see the Gunners be supportive of Torreira and his involvement with the national team. The player did not start the first two matches but after that, he has started every match that Uruguay has played.

In the three matches where he started, he has impressed a lot with his ball winning ability as well as the way he can pick out a pass. From the looks of it, he will fit right into the Arsenal team as a midfield trio of Xhaka, Torreira and Ramsey is a frightening prospect.

Now, all that remains is for the move to be made official and for the player to arrive in London. Based on his performances at the World Cup, it is safe to say that Arsenal fans will have high hopes for Torreira. And with the way the new set up is working, everything seems to be in place for him to be a success.
